The organizational committee of the Toronto Electroacoustic Symposium is hard at work finalizing the programme for the Toronto Electroacoustic Symposium 2011, the fifth iteration of the popular event that brings composers, sound and media artists, electroacoustic performers, musicologists and theorists from across Canada and around the world to Toronto each August, in close conjunction with the annual Sound Travels festival. This fifth symposium coincides with anniversary years for the two organizations that co-produce it: it is the 10th anniversary of New Adventures in Sound Art and the 25th anniversary of the Canadian Electroacoustic Community (CEC).
Given the anniversary nature of the symposium, it will open with special remarks by CEC co-founder Kevin Austin on the role of artists’ organizations in the second decade of the 21st century. Thanks to NAISA, the symposium will feature a keynote lecture by Sound Travels guest artist Jonty Harrison. A special session on laptop orchestra techniques and organization is being planned (new for this year), and the latest iteration of the 60x60 Canada project will be presented in a special listening session. While the final details of the programme are still being set in stone, we can already reveal already that, alongside themes that have been represented strongly in the past, this year’s symposium will feature a number of presentations on the theme of curating electroacoustic music events — which, again, is fitting given the double anniversary we will be celebrating.
And if you need one more reason to attend the fifth Toronto Electroacoustic Symposium? The CEC will hold its annual general meeting in Toronto, at the symposium, this year — in a departure from the usual practice of holding it in Montréal in the late Fall. So put it in your calendars now (August 10–13)!
