Interviews
Since 2009 I have done over 60 interviews with various people in eastern Canada, northeastern USA, England and Germany for my PhD on the production of music with live electronics. For this study I’m interviewing various people who deal with live electronics on some level — publishers, promoters, sound engineers and technicians, composers and performers. The aim is to streamline the production of music with live electronics in order to have fewer failures in the concerts and less stress for the performer.
I chose to do the interviews in a one-on-one setting because I’m specifically interested in the things that go wrong, which is of course of a delicate nature and not easily settled by a standardized questionnaire. Although the interviews were conducted in a semi-guided way in order to ensure my specific research needs were met, the interviewees were free to elaborate or even go off on related tangents as they felt fit.
These, interviews offer an overview of the interviewees’ professional experiences, their education and training with electronic music, their strategies to make electronics reliable and their view on what could be or has to be done to make concerts with live electronics as reliable as concerts without any electronics.
